Maybe you’ve heard of search engine marketing and search engine optimisation, but you’re not quite sure of their importance. But in a day when the primary medium is becoming the Worldwide web, they are incredibly important.

It’s a fact that in today’s world, electronics have taken over every form of communication. One of the primary conveniences electronics offer is the Internet, openly used by millions upon millions of people each day. Students, businesses and schools use the Internet for research, from how the stock market is doing to how to find your friend on Facebook.

There are ways that these searches are found successfully and there are a couple steps of making this work. Search engine marketing is the form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by making the visibility of the site in the search engine results greater.

Search Engine Marketing Steps

Search engine marketing methods include search engine optimization, placements that have been paid for, contextual advertising and paid inclusion. The method I would like to look at and compare to search engine marketing (SEM) is search engine optimisation (SEO). SEO is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to the site from a search engine.

We have all noticed that there are always the websites that are at the top of the list all the time when we get results from the engines; this is because the more a website is visited the higher the rank of the page will go. So we look at SEM and SEO and we see that it is built in with the search engine market to provide a better outcome for the search you provide.

We look at this and see that it can be a complicated process; however, it works to our advantage. They have made it so that the Internet is an understood resource that we can turn to whenever we need it. These search engines are very helpful and with the help of this process, we can find our page faster and more efficiently.

It seems like such a good alternative, rather than going through the time and expense of optimising your website by using Search Engine Marketing, you just buy or download some link-submission software and promote your site the easy way. Let’s discuss why this might not be the best option.

Search Engine Marketing is a marketing strategy designed to increase potential “visits” to your website by way of search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and Lycos. SEM, as it is commonly referred to, could be achieved through various methods such as Search Engine Optimisation, contextual advertising, and paid placement.

Increase your Search Engine Ranking

Internet marketers who implement Search Engine Optimisation methods for their clients will work to increase their client’s website “rank” in a given search results. In other words, Search Engine Optimization is in essence, a series of techniques designed to increase visitors to a website by increasing the websites position in the major search engines.

The marketing professional may edit a website to include relevant keywords, which would typically be typed into a search box, ideally by potential clients. Due to the popularity of this method, SEO marketing software and link submission programs developed by internet marketing companies are currently available in the market.

Do it yourself SEO

Although this may appeal to the “do-it-yourself” marketing types, this is often not the best strategy for most business savvy individuals. Still many opt to hire an experienced internet marketing professional to ensure that their websites and businesses hit a larger audience.

This is perhaps a reflection of the various issues related to the do-it-yourself software. In addition to being time consuming, most individuals do not have the experience of identifying key strategies that are appropriate for a particular business or product. So what may work for one company may not necessarily work for another. Internet marketing professionals are trained in identifying the specific strategies that would be relevant to a particular business.

Here’s yet another one of those acronyms that the Internet has foisted upon us: SEM. It stands for “Search Engine Marketing.

Indeed, the Internet has become a dominant part of marketing that has its unique benefits because of the ease and interactivity of the web. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is an important tool in promoting websites, making it easier for people to find what they are looking for, and increasing sales for online businesses.

Making your website search engine friendly

An important part of promoting web sites is by making them more visible in the search engine result pages; this can be achieved with Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Search Engine Optimization is a form of search engine marketing because it aims to improve the amount of traffic to web sites, which increases their visibility in the search results.

The more traffic flowing into one web site the more visible its page will be. A tactic in improving the traffic to a web site is through HTML coding to increase it’s relevance to a specific topic by using keywords. Another way of optimizing a website is by editing its content to create a more “search engine-friendly” site, which could be used to increase the relevance of the web site.

Search Engine Marketing Bad Habits

What many people do to promote their own web site is they purchase marketing software and link submission software, which they hope will give them the traffic they need. The problem with marketing software is that they will send your web site into relevant result pages of many different search engines, but the visibility of your website will be next to none.

Many of these downloads are scams and should be carefully researched before making a purchase. Search Engine Optimisers, experts in search engine marketing, can carry out optimisation projects for clients, a service that could very well create the success for websites with potential.

Pay-per-click (or PPC) is a profitable form of advertising on the Internet, usually done in conjunction with search engines such as Yahoo Search Marketing, ask.com, Microsoft adCenter, and Google AdWords. Advertisers identify relevant keywords and bid on them. The highest bidder will get the top placement in the search engine results in the sponsored ad section when the keyword is searched for. The second highest bid will get the second spot on the page and so on.

Benefits of PPC to your company

There are numerous benefits to a business using London PPC advertising. For instance, with more of your customers conducting business online, it is important for your company to make yourself visible to your internet customer base. PPC is a smart way for businesses to increase their consumer base through a simple advertising process that shows results quickly and may be more cost efficient than traditional advertising routes.

Another chief advantage to PPC advertising for businesses is that the advertiser is only charged when the link is clicked on instead of every time the link is viewed. This method gives the business ongoing feedback on its relevance to the customer base through that particular keyword. PPC is also a faster way for advertisers to get their sites onto search engine result pages. Unlike normal search engine results, which can take weeks to change, the sponsored links can be updated in minutes.

Limitations of PPC to your business

The limitations of this program are mostly integrated in the bidding system. It’s because the sponsored links are changed so quickly and easily that the bidding for some keywords can escalate quickly, resulting in prices that may become too high for some smaller businesses. The other point is that there is the chance that a customer will decide the company isn’t what they are looking for and leave. The company would still be charged for the customer’s visit even though they didn’t generate any revenue from it.

“Pay per click” marketing, also known as PPC, is an internet ad term. “Pay per click” simply means that a host site is not paid unless an advertiser’s ad is clicked upon. Some notable PPC search engines include Yahoo!, Google, and Ask.com. The Goliath among the pack is MSN adCenter. You’ve probably noticed when using these sites that some ads are run under the banner, “sponsored ads”: These are the pay per click advertisers.

Advantages of Pay Per Click – PPC

All in all, PPC can be a very effective marketing tool. It can be beneficial in the sense that advertisers are continually noticed by a target audience, but they only have to pay when the ad is clicked on. Web users may also find it beneficial too, as they do not have to sort through a mountain of returned data to find credible web sites without annoying banners and flash ads.

PPC works in quite an interesting way. After writing an ad, a company will bid on keywords that correspond to it. When a user types a query that matches the keywords paid for in the advertisers bid, the sponsored ad will pop up. If the user then decides to click on the ad, the search engine gets paid the bid price.

Disadvantages of Pay Per Click – PPC

Although Pay Per Click can be one of the most affordable forms of advertising on the internet, there are some instances where PPC can be disadvantageous. When using popular search words, a bidding war may ensue among advertisers. While you don’t want to end up at the bottom of the list, you certainly don’t want to spend all your money outbidding competitors. To determine if a PPC marketing strategy is right for your company, divide the profit you make on a website over a period of time by the total number of visitors in that time period. You will want to be paying less for each hit than the final calculation.

With the seemingly infinite number of ways to advertise online, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the choices or weighed down by technological jargon. Pay Per Click advertising, simply put, is a model in which advertisers pay search engines (such as Google or Ask.com) per clicks on their ad rather than per ad view.

The trick here, however, is that a company’s ad is only displayed when certain keywords are queried—keywords that the company must bid upon in order to have their ads shown. This cost tends to be tremendously variable, as is the Cost Per Click (CPC), based upon the target market of the advertising company and the size of the search engine.

The big PPC players

Three of the largest PPC providers are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter; there are also several consulting firms that will help your company determine the best engine and keywords for your needs. Additionally, the advent of social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace have created new applications of the PPC model as well as new markets for advertisers.

PPC is all about being able to target your ads towards a demographic that previously was impossible to target: people searching for information or services that your company provides.

PPC Fraud

Even better, you are not charged per view of your ad, which means that with a compelling and succinct ad, you’ll be getting at least your name out to some folks for free! On the other hand, however, PPC advertising is somewhat susceptible to fraud or other schemes that are common in all types of online advertising.

Fortunately, since PPC is the leading source of revenue for many search engines, safeguards are quickly being developed to help guard against these problems, so don’t let that dissuade you from exploring this valuable and potentially profitable option!

Pay Per Click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model used on search engines, advertising networks and web logs (or blogs). The philosophy behind the advertising method is that a person’s target audience be interested in certain topics–interested enough to click on a related keyword, if it’s highlighted.

An advertiser using a PPC website bids on keywords and phrases relevant to their target market. The website shows an advertiser’s ad when the site displays relevant content, or when a keyword of the search-query matches an advertiser’s purchased keyword list.

The website displaying the ad commonly charges a fixed price per click and more prominence is given to the advertisers who pay higher rates or make the higher bids. Some of the leading providers of keyword-based PPC ad space are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, Ask.com, LookSmart, Microsoft adCenter, MIVA, Yandex and Baidu.

A business can benefit from PPC because unlike traditional internet advertising it creates brand awareness but focuses your ad audience. PPC guarantees that you will only be paying for people who are interested in your product to see your ad.

This is made possible by giving your company control over which users arrive at your website through your choice of keywords. If a keyword isn’t working for you or you decide to target a different audience, a revision of the advertising component is possible and easy.

The PPC bidding process for the best ad placement on a webpage or for the most commonly used keywords, however, never guarantees ranking and can be costly. Also PPC advertising’s click measuring tools are near perfect, but are certainly not 100 percent. This can cause uncertainty about the number of clicks an ad receives and give advertisers trouble when trying to gather an accurate account of their ad campaign’s success.

Here are some questions we often get asked at SearchGeeks.co.uk

Why is SEO important to my company website?

Studies show that when people search for a product or services on the Internet, they seldom look beyond the first page or two of results…and the higher your business appears the better. Search engines use a complicated methodology of calculating and determining where a particular company’s page will turn up in any given search—and sometimes it doesn’t turn up at all. It requires a professional who specializes in SEO strategies to give your business or website the most prominent spot on Google, Yahoo, or other search engines, which is possible.

How much will it cost me?

This depends on several different factors. For instance, how much competition do you have? It stands to reason that if your business is so unique that any search for your service results in only a handful of businesses, then not much work is required to give you a good Google or Yahoo result. But if there are thousands of businesses competing for those prime search engine spots, more time and resources are required. Also, your target area affects the cost, as does the number of months you are requesting SEO services. Individual quotes are, of course, available.

I was told my current website is SEO’d already. Why do I need you?

Mark our words: If your site as not been optimized by an SEO specialist, it hasn’t been SEO’d well. Sometimes, web / domain hosts will promise to do some limited work to optimize your site—but the key word is “limited.” They’re spending their best time and money on their own specialty, i.e., hosting the site. And if you’re not convinced, do a Google or Yahoo search on some key words that would describe your business. How high does it turn up? We’re betting you feel that there’s room for improvement. You can bet that improvement will only happen at the hands of an SEO expert.

How long will it take to see progress?

Let’s be honest: You probably won’t move up to the number one position on Google in 24 hours. Progress takes time. But in some instances, businesses begin to see results within a matter of a few days. You should allow four or six weeks, though, to see maximum results.

Will you make my website number one on Google’s or Yahoo’s results page?

That might depend on the answer to one question: Number one for what? With most businesses, there are literally thousands of different keyword combinations that might be used to call up your page, and no SEO expert can guarantee that, no matter what keywords are used, you will always be number one. To see how absurd this is, some person might think of Coca-Cola or Pepsi as “pop,” but do a simple Google search on the word “pop,” and you won’t turn up either Pepsi or Coke on the first page. The more unique the keywords, the higher we can get your results to land on these pages. So our answer is this: We will work diligently to land your page within the first several listings on Google or Yahoo with the best-known keywords that people are likely to use in searching for your product or service.

Let’s talk about some of the myths many people believe about optimising a page for the search engines.

The Myth of Meta Tags

There are probably hundreds if not thousands of people who believe a website’s success rises or falls on good meta tags. This stems from the fact that, in the earlier days of the Internet, when the search engines were using different algorithms, the engines and directories relied on meta descriptions to tell them what was on the web page and to index it appropriately. Today’s algorithms, though, rely much less on the meta descriptions. There is still some importance to them, but not nearly as much as was once the case.

The Myth of Multiple Domain Names

The logic, which has some merit, goes like this: You should register any domain that sounds remotely similar to your own so that you don’t lose the traffic of those who mistype the url or those who remembered it slightly differently. For instance, in addition to www.pepsi.com, the company might register pepsee.com, for those who spell it wrong. There is some value to this, but mostly for the bigger companies that can spend a lot of money registering multiple domains. The smaller business, however, can get more hits if they just spend the time and money that they were considering spending on multiple domains, and instead invest it in promoting one good domain name.

The myth that SEO experts are too expensive

In truth, search engine optimisation (SEO) is less expensive than many pay-per-click (PPC) programs and less expensive than other marketing campaigns. It’s certainly less than direct mail or renting email lists. It’s also less than most banner ads or print ads.

The myth that you can do it yourself

In the old days, this was probably true. But the algorithms and strategies have become so complex today that only a paid professional can do an adequate of job of improving your site’s performance in the major search engines

The history of our industry really begins in 1995, as a start-up company named Yahoo is just getting going. Since Yahoo began as a search engine, with its birth came the need for companies and websites to get their sites listed in the search directory….as high as possible.

In those early days, it was anyone’s guess as to where your site would land in a search directory’s listings. It was a matter of trial and error…until the concept of keyword density started to be noticed. That is, the more significant part a keyword played on a site, the higher it tended to land on searches for that keyword.

In those early days, you could get your site listed on Yahoo by simply submitting it to them. Usually the site was listed within three days.

Around mid-1997, it became more and more apparent that getting listed with Yahoo was essential. The company was inundated with submissions. Between 1997 and 98, Yahoo probably processed fewer than five percent of sites submitted to them.

In the late 1990s, search engines started realizing that they were portals to the rest of the Web, which meant people were there only a short time before leaving for some other place that the search engine itself directed them to.

Also around this time, spam started becoming a serious problem for search engines as unscrupulous website owners started manipulating the algorithms to point searches to their site, even if the search really did not apply to them. Spam rendered AltaVista and Hotbot nearly useless in late 1997 because of this problem.

Around 98 and 98, decoding algorithms became quite sophisticated. SEO firms hired programmers to design code crackers for that purpose. Site theft and page jacking became quite rampant. If you put up a top page on a search engine such as AltaVista, sites would steal the content and look of the entire site to eliminate the competition (accomplished because AltaVista would eliminate duplicate pages).

And of course, around this time, Google makes its first big splash. Their first build featured 25 million urls. The other big event: The appearance of the open source directory, posing a threat to traditional directories. Soon, to truly be successful on the Web, you had to be listed in Yahoo and Google.

Over the years, there have been drastic changes in the search engine methods and algorithms, which means it has always changed the ways to improve a site’s spot in any given search. But the SEO experts have always managed to crack the secrets to improving a web page’s performance.
